ICI Bucharest contributes to the European dialogue on renewable energy and regional security at the third regional workshop of the Symbiosis project

ICI Bucharest participated in the third regional workshop organized under the aegis of the Symbiosis project of the European Defence Agency (EDA). The event took place between 14 and 15 January 2025 in Copenhagen and was organized by the EDA in partnership with the Danish Ministry of Defence and with the support of Danish maritime companies, Terma - a technology provider in the field of defence and security - and Ørsted - the largest operator of offshore wind farms in the world.

During the workshop, participants - including ICI Bucharest representatives - were involved in expert-led discussions and had the opportunity to explore innovative technologies presented in interactive demonstrations.

The event brought together key stakeholders from across Europe, including government representatives, industry leaders and experts, to identify practical solutions to ensure sustainable offshore wind energy development while meeting operational defence needs in the strategic Baltic Sea region.

The Symbiosis project, funded by the Horizon Europe programme, represents a key step in promoting collaboration between the renewable energy and security sectors to ensure a harmonious coexistence between these two priorities.

During the workshop, ICI Bucharest highlighted the role of advanced digital solutions in supporting the green transition and strengthening regional security. In addition, the institute highlighted the importance of protecting critical renewable energy infrastructure from a cybersecurity perspective, both for IT and operational (OT) systems.

This participation strengthens the institute's involvement in European initiatives, continuing its successful contribution to the Symbiosis regional workshop series. The first event in this series was dedicated to the Black Sea and was organized in Bucharest between 30 and 31 May 2024, with the support of ICI Bucharest as a partner. Romania is the first country in the region to have a law for offshore wind projects and will have the first projects online after 2028, which will impact the national security profile from the perspective of hybrid threats.
